Gallery Insider: The Matting Process

Ever wonder how prints get matted? Our professional framer of 18 years walked us through the process with Rob Gonsalves’s Pursuit of Balance paper print. All the supplies listed below can be found at local art supply stores such as Plaza Arts or Michaels.

Supply List:
-paper print
-mat board, sized
-backing board, sized
-acid free tape
-ATG double face tape
-measuring tape
-mat cutter

  1. Size and cut your boards. For the mat board, I opted for a ½” border around the image to leave space for the artist signature. For the backing board, I left an additional 4” border on all sides for the frame.
  2. Attach 2 pieces of acid free tape vertically at the top of the paper print. Next, attach the print to the mat board. Make sure you hang it with no wrinkles in the tape.
  3. Use the ATG to place double face tape in strips along the back of your mat board, focusing on the edges. Attach the mat board to the backing board.

That’s it! 3 simple steps to take your print to next level. You can follow our blog on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date on all Gallery Insider posts.
